Welcome to the 30 Day Self-Care Challenge. From July 1st to 30th I'll be giving you a daily prompt to indulge in some activity which will give you time to focus on yourself and, hopefully enhance your well-being.
I'm starting the month with a simple activity - reading. Today I'd like you to find a quiet spot where you can read without distraction for thirty minutes. You can read anything you like, you're not sitting an exam or trying to impress anyone at your book club. If your book of choice absorbs you, inspires you or transports you to another time or place - read it and enjoy it.
Reading is one of the best simple pleasures I know. Books are everywhere, you can buy them in the high street or have a digital copy delivered to you in a matter of minutes. If you haven't visited your local library in a while, have a look at what they offer - you may be surprised. Many now offer digital books and magazines and on-line access to catalogues and ordering systems. What a privilege it is to have free books!
So that's it for today - all you need is a book (and maybe your reading specs!)
If you're wondering what I'll be reading, I've chosen Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg. I've seen (and loved) the film but I've yet to read the book. I have read all of her other novels and they've all been great reads, so I don't think this one will disappoint.
The day Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison opened the Whistle Stop Cafe, the town took a turn for the better. It was the Depression and that cafe was a home from home for many of us. You could get eggs, grits, bacon, ham, coffee and a smile for 25 cents. Ruth was just the sweetest girl you ever met. And Idgie? She was a character, all right. You never saw anyone so headstrong. But how anybody could have thought she murdered that man is beyond me
If you want to compile reading list for future reference, here's a simple printout for you.
